Images on disk

For images on disk, the color profile is fetched from a file with the same basename as the image, but with the extension of the color profile file (.icm). This file should be a shortcut to a profile file in a shared central store, rather than a copy of the profile. This has advantages when the same profile is shared by several images:

• Applications only have to load the profile once.

• Only one copy of the profile needs to be stored; this saves significantly on disk space, since profile files can be quite big (typically several hundred KBytes for a scanner profile).

• Should the profile need updating, only a single copy needs to be altered.
